Precare – Milia Extraction Information Sheet

This pre-care information is designed to help you prepare for your milia extraction appointment. It outlines what to expect, how to prepare, and the potential risks and benefits. If you have any questions after reading this, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

What is milia extraction?

Milia extraction is a simple, in-clinic procedure to remove small, white keratin-filled cysts (milia) that sit just beneath the surface of the skin. A sterile needle is used to create a tiny opening over each milium, allowing the contents to be gently expressed. The treatment is quick, precise, and usually very well tolerated.

How long does the procedure take?

Treatment time varies depending on the number of milia being removed, but typically takes 10–20 minutes. In most cases, no anaesthetic is required. If several milia are being treated or if you would prefer, a topical numbing cream (Emla®) may be applied beforehand for comfort.

How to prepare for your appointment

To ensure the best outcome and minimise risks, please follow these guidelines:

  • Arrive with clean skin. On the day of treatment, cleanse your face with a mild cleanser and avoid applying makeup, creams, or lotions to the treatment area.
  • Inform us of any skin infections. Please let us know if you have an active cold sore or any other infection in the area to be treated.
  • Discuss medications and allergies. Let your dermatologist know if you are taking blood-thinning medication (such as aspirin or ibuprofen), or have allergies to anaesthetics or adhesive dressings.

What to expect during the procedure

  • The skin will be cleansed and disinfected before treatment.
  • A sterile needle will be used to gently pierce each milium, and the contents will be carefully extracted.
  • Depending on the site, a small plaster may be applied after treatment.
  • Most people describe only a slight pricking or stinging sensation.

Potential benefits

  • Quick and effective removal of milia
  • Minimal downtime
  • Immediate cosmetic improvement in most cases

Potential risks and side effects

While milia extraction is a very low-risk procedure, you may experience:

  • Temporary redness or swelling
  • A small dot of bleeding at the treatment site
  • Formation of a tiny scab or crust during healing
  • Bruising (rare)
  • Infection (uncommon)
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly in darker skin tones
  • Incomplete removal or recurrence of milia in the future

Special considerations

Please avoid scheduling treatment immediately before an important social event, as mild redness or tiny scabs may be visible for a few days.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please inform us before your appointment.

Patients who have taken oral isotretinoin (Roaccutane) within the past 6 months should ideally delay treatment.
