What is microneedling?
Microneedling is an in-office procedure, used to create microscopic punctures in the surface of the skin that trigger the body’s natural wound healing process. This process results in skin remodelling, including the formation of collagen and elastin, two proteins responsible for the structural integrity of the skin. The SkinPen is an FDA-approved mechanical microneedling device used for the treatment of fine lines, wrinkles and scars. It is effective on the face, neck, decolletage and body. The device introduces a fine needle into the surface of the skin super-fast, making it much more comfortable, precise and effective than old-fashioned roller versions.
What effects does the SkinPen have on the skin?
Microneedling improves skin texture and reduces wrinkles. It reduces scars e.g. acne scars. It improves blood supply and evens out pigmentation.
How is the procedure performed & does it hurt?
The skin is cleaned and a numbing cream can be applied. Skin is needled in sections. Multiple passes are made in each section leading to even flushing. Sensations of heat, tingling and prickliness can be expected during treatment. Treatment takes between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on the sites to be treated.
Can it be performed on any skin colour?
Since SkinPen does not use thermal heat (unlike IPL & lasers), it is safe for all skin types. Skin of colour may darken temporarily prior to lightening. The risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is low.
How often can the SkinPen procedure be repeated?
For skin rejuvenation, we recommend starting with 3 treatments at 4 weekly intervals. To maintain results, it is advisable to repeat treatment at 3-6 monthly intervals.
For scar reduction therapy, an average of 3 to 6 treatments are recommended for optimal results.
What is the down time after a SkinPen treatment?
The inflammatory reaction of the skin is extremely short and fades significantly within hours from redness to pinkness that may last for 12 to 48 hours on average. Tenderness, puffiness and mild flaking are sometimes seen.
Soothing products will be given to you for use in the first 24 hours. You are strongly advised to avoid the sun and wear SPF50 daily throughout your treatment and in the longer term to maximise results.
Risks of post-treatment infections?
Since the tiny punctures close within hours, and provided the procedure is done under clinical conditions, post-treatment infections are very unlikely.
