Precare – Profhilo Information Sheet

This precare document is designed to give you information about the procedure, including what to expect, how to prepare, and the potential risks and benefits. If you have any questions after reading this, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

What is Profhilo and how does it work?

Profhilo is an injectable treatment that applies the latest hyaluronic acid technology to hydrate the skin and stimulate new collagen and elastin production at the same time. If your skin looks dry and crepey no matter how much moisturiser you apply or if you are beginning to suffer from skin laxity, Profhilo can be used to tighten loose or sagging skin, smooth wrinkling and give a more plumped skin surface. It has both a preventative and corrective role in addressing the signs of ageing and can deliver great results as a treatment on its own or in combination with other aesthetic treatments currently on offer. Because it contains hyaluronic acid, Profhilo is often confused with dermal fillers but they are very different. Fillers are used to create volume and to change the structure of your face, whilst Profhilo actually integrates with your tissue to improve the surface appearance of your skin.

What happens during the treatment?

Profhilo is typically injected at 5 points on each side of the face. It can also be used to treat the neck, decollete and hands. Because it requires no anaesthetic and just a few injection points, the treatment is over in a matter of minutes.

The downtime is minimal. Immediately after the procedure, you may notice a bump at each of the injection sites. This is normal and to be expected. Over the following 24 – 48 hours, the bumps will smooth out as the product disperses under the surface of the skin and spreads throughout the intended treatment area.

How quickly will I notice results?

Optimum results from treatment will be visible four weeks after the course of Profhilo, which involves two injectable treatments one month apart.

The course should be repeated every 6 months for best results.

What are the risks?

The most common side effects of Profhilo are temporary redness, tenderness and swelling over the injection sites. Rarer side effects include bruising, delayed swellings and even rarer, allergies. Hyaluronic acid comes as a gel and if this is injected into a blood vessel, it can cause blockages. This happens extremely rarely in skilled medical hands, and should it happen, your doctor may be able to clear the blockage with a variety of techniques in the clinic.

What precautions should I take before my appointment?

  1. Please do not take aspirin, ibuprofen or any other blood thinning medicines for at least 1 week before your treatment to reduce the risk of bruising. If you need to take a blood-thinning medicine for a pre-existing medical condition, please discuss this with your doctor before booking your appointment.
  2. There is anecdotal evidence that arnica pills and creams may reduce bruising. You can purchase arnica pills from a chemist and start taking them according to package instructions on the day of or on the day before your planned treatment if there are no contraindications.
  3. Please do not book your treatment if you have a special occasion or event coming up in the following 7 days to allow time for full recovery in the event of swelling or bruising.
  4. Please do not book a treatment if you are due to fly in the following week. Aesthetic treatments are medical procedures and, as such, in the event that you encounter a side effect or complication, your doctor will want to be able to see you to provide treatment or reassurance as necessary.
  5. Please do not wear makeup to your appointment. You will not be able to reapply makeup for 12 hours after your treatment.
  6. Please do not plan any cardio or high intensity exercise for a week after your treatment and ideally no facials, saunas or steam rooms for 2 weeks after.
  7. Treatment cannot be performed if you have an active cold sore so please reschedule your appointment if you have a cold sore in the week prior to your treatment.
